The Marcellus Shale
West Virginia’s Energy Future
MARCELLUS SHALE IN THE NEWS - THIS WEEK
Check
it out:
Dominion Resources has hired a Texas contractor to build a $500 million processing plant in Natrium, WV. 600 construction jobs are at stake – and we have more than 600 unemployed local workers who are qualified and ready to build the plant. But Dominion, and their Texas company, will not commit to hiring local workers.
We need to tell Dominion – build here, hire here.

It’s been called the key to the future, something that can yield huge benefits, our economic salvation.
Perhaps. But one thing is for certain: The Marcellus Shale is vast and the natural gas it holds means much to West Virginia's economy.
Stretching from upstate New York through Pennsylvania and down through most of West Virginia, the Marcellus Shale houses around 500 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
The Marcellus Shale refers to the “Marcellus Shale Formation” which is a geologic rock formation composed of black shale.
But Marcellus Shale goes well beyond just drilling gas wells. It will mean building hundreds of miles of pipelines, roadways, and transmission and metering stations, along with the necessary gas processing facilities.
The Marcellus Shale is a golden opportunity for West Virginia’s economy as long as priorities are in order and common sense guidelines are followed.
Tapping into this wealth of a reserve should be done responsibly and with the benefits of job creation going to West Virginians.
Many times in the rush to get a quick profit when a new industry is emerging, corners are cut and poor decisions are made. Doing the job right will save time and money, and it is what’s best for West Virginia.
OUR GREATEST RESOURCE
The natural gas from the Marcellus Shale in West Virginia should be captured, cleaned and shipped by our state’s most valuable resource – our talented, hard-working men and women.
PUT PEOPLE FIRST
The natural resources of our great state should first and foremost be a benefit to our people. The resources under West Virginia’s land are not there to exclusively benefit big corporations. We welcome them to responsibly harness the natural resources here as long as they remember that our people, not their profits, must come first.
